Spotify SongDNA: What Artists Need to Know
Spotify has introduced a feature called SongDNA that gives listeners a deeper look at the creative process behind the music they love — and gives artists more control over how their contributions are represented on the platform.
What Is SongDNA?
SongDNA is a discovery tool built into the Spotify mobile app that maps out the network of people involved in making a track. Rather than presenting a flat list of credits, it visualizes the relationships between collaborators — showing how songwriters, producers, engineers, featured performers, and others are connected across a recording.
The feature is accessible to Spotify Premium listeners through the Now Playing screen. From there, listeners can explore a track's full creative ecosystem, including samples and interpolations that link it to other songs in Spotify's catalog. SongDNA can also be viewed at the artist level, giving listeners a broader picture of an artist's collaborative history across multiple releases.
Why It Matters for Artists
For artists, SongDNA represents a meaningful shift in how credits are surfaced to audiences. Collaborators who have historically gone unnoticed — session musicians, mix engineers, co-writers — now have visibility directly within the listening experience.
Equally significant is the credit management functionality that comes with it. In the past, fixing an incorrect or missing credit typically meant going through a label or distributor, a process that could be slow and difficult to navigate. SongDNA changes that dynamic by giving artists direct tools to manage certain credits themselves.
Managing Your Credits in Spotify for Artists
Credit management for SongDNA is handled through Spotify for Artists on desktop. To make changes to a track, you need to be listed as its main artist. From there, you can:
- Show or hide specific third-party contributor credits
- Add credits for collaborators who already have a presence on Spotify
- Remove any supplemental credits you previously added
- Manage song connections, such as samples and interpolations
Artists with more than 5,000 monthly active listeners have access to additional controls, including the ability to hide individual contributor credits that were delivered by a label or distributor. Note that main artist, featured artist, and remixer credits cannot be hidden.
Any changes made through Spotify for Artists typically go live in the SongDNA experience within 48 hours.
Getting Started
If you haven't explored SongDNA yet, it's worth logging into Spotify for Artists on desktop to review how your credits are currently displayed. Ensuring your collaborators are accurately credited is both a professional courtesy and a way to make sure the full story behind your music is told correctly.
